An Australian-born novelist, short story writer, and non-fiction author, she is known for her 2003 novel, The Great Fire, for which she received the US National Book Award. Her previous work, The Bay of Noon (1970), was shortlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize.
She received the O. Henry Award in 1976 for her short story, "A Long Short Story."
