He studied law at Charles University in Prague from which he graduated in 1935. He was an officer in the cavalry from 1936 to 1939.
His family was Jewish, and he was forced to flee Czechoslovakia for Great Britain because of the rise of the Nazis. He married Edith lane in 1944. His son is the mathematician Thomas Körner, and his daughter is Ann M. Körner, a biologist, writer, and translator.
