He became a naturalized US citizen. in 1933 and was awarded the Medal of Freedom 30 years later. He celebrated his 100th appearance with the New York Symphony Orchestra in 1972.

He was recognized as a child prodigy and was playing with major symphony orchestras at the age of 12. By his teenage years, he had given a series of regular concerts in Berlin.
