She grew up as a tomboy, often playing in the trees and hunting animals like rats.
In 1909, after the family was reunited, she and her sister attended the Amelia Earhart public school.
In 1914 her father had to retire due to alcoholism, her eldest mother died suddenly. That greatly influenced the lives of her sisters.
In 1915, her father found a new job as a railroad worker in St. Paul, Minnesota, she transferred to Central High School. But the demands of her job force her father to leave his daughter. He refused a job and moved with his children to Chicago. She transferred to Hyde Park High School.
In 1916 she graduated from Hyde Park High School.
She then attended Ogontz College in Rydal, Pennsylvania, but dropped out and did not complete the course.
For Christmas break in 1917, she went to Toronto to join her sister.
When During World War I, she trained as a nurse's assistant in the Red Cross program, and became a volunteer at Spadina Military Hospital. Her job was to deliver medicine to patients and prepare special meals for patients.
In 1918, during the flu pandemic in Toronto, Spain, she took up nursing at the Hospital. Spadina Army. She then developed pneumonia and sinusitis, and was hospitalized in early November 1918.
She began learning to fly on 3/11/1921 at Kinner Field near Long Beach.
May 15. In 1923 she was the 16th woman to receive a pilot's license.
In 1924 she was hospitalized again for sinus problems, the same year her parents divorced. She then went back to study for a few months at Columbia University, then dropped out because her mother couldn't afford the tuition.
In 1925 she found a job as a social worker at Denison House in Medford. of Massachusetts.

Her parents are Samuel "Edwin" Stanton Earhart and Amelia "Amy" (nee Otis). Her maternal grandfather, Sir Alfred Gideon Otis, was a former federal judge and chairman of Atchison Savings Bank. She was the second child in the family, her older brothers died as an infant. She is of German descent. She also has a younger sister, Grace Muriel Earhart, more commonly known by the nickname "Pidge". She was nicknamed "Meeley" (sometimes "Millie"). She was named after two aunts in the family, Amelia Josephine Harres and Mary Wells Patton.
