After graduating from high school, she studied dance at Marymount Manhattan College. Intending to pursue it professionally, her career was cut short after a terrible back injury. However, at the professor's encouragement, she shot her scene to a career in writing.
Openly lesbian, she discovered her gender while writing for orange is the new black. She then filed for divorce from her husband of two years, Steve Basilone, before starting a relationship with Orange's New Black actress Samira Wiley.
