James Phillip Welch, Jr. better known by his pen name James Welch, is a famous American poet and novelist. James Welch grew up in the Blackfeet and A'aninin cultures of his parents. He is also the founder of the Native American Renaissance. James Welch's novel "Fools Crow" was released in 1986 and has received numerous literary awards. His debut novel "Winter in the Blood" released in 1974 was adapted into a film of the same name, released in 2013. In 1997, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Native Writers' Circle of the Americas.
James Welch started out by publishing poetry and novels. His works have had their place in the Native American Renaissance literary movement. He has taught at a university and received honorary doctorates from Rocky Mountain College in 1993 and the University of Montana in 1997. In 1995, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the French Ministry of Culture. James Welch's novels have been translated into 9 different languages and published in many countries around the world. He taught at the College of Northern Montana (currently Montana State University-Northern). He has taught English and literature at the University of Washington and Cornell University.
In addition to writing poetry and fiction, James Welch collaborated with Paul Stekler to co-wrote the screenplay of "Last Stand" at the Little Bighorn. . This film later won an Emmy Award for documentary. They also co-wrote historical literary works such as "Killing Custer: The Battle of Little Bighorn and the Fate of the Plains Indians".
