Considered one of the most important African-American poets of his generation, Dodson published collections such as The Confession Stone: Cycles Song and The Harlem Book of the Dead. During his career, he also wrote two autobiographical novels and six plays.
He was deeply influenced by the works of American writers William Stanley fellow Braithwaite and W. H. Auden.

After graduating from Bates College, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama. He then headed Howard University drama for three decades.
