Doctor was elected President of Chile only in 1970 to be overthrown three years later by General Augusto Pinoche. Thus was the first Marxist elected president of a Latin American country and as President he adopted a policy of nationalizing industry and collectivization.
He committed suicide shortly after giving a farewell speech to Chile on the radio because he refused to be used as a propaganda tool by the Chilean army that orchestrated the coup overthrow him.
