From a young age, Ba Van and his siblings were invited by their parents to teach music. He was taught to play drums, play horizontal toys, gamble, lute, pliers... Ba Van had a beautiful voice, so he was noticed and taught more about singing by the teacher. After studying music, Ba Van sang for parties in the village.
In 1920, he joined the singing group Kieu Van Tien. In the following years, he joined the Tai Dong Ban, then Tan Hi, Dong Thinh and Nghia Hiep Ban. From 1927 to 1929, he joined the Quang Lac burden in Hanoi.
