Known to become the first Indian tennis player to win a Grand Slam after he was arrested in 1997 at the French Open in the men's and women's split. In 2006, he became the ninth player ever to achieve a career Grand Slam in mixed doubles by winning the Australian Open.
On March 26, 2001, he received India's highest national honor, Padma Shri. He received it along with his regular partner, and prolific Indian tennis player, Leander Paes.
