A German chemist who is known as one of the founders of the field of physical chemistry. He won the 1909 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery that chemical reactions occur at a finite rate, and that these rates can be used to find the strengths of acids and bases.
He became a member of the International Commission on Atomic Scales in 1906 and served on the committee until the outbreak of World War I.
