Influential illustrator and children's book author best known for his 1,883 works "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" and his four volumes set on King Arthur. His first novel, "Otto of the Gamblers," was published in 1888. Many of his pirate drawings were influenced by modern conceptions (stereotypes) of pirate costumes.

He began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute of Arts, Sciences and Industry in 1894. After the turn of the century, he founded the Howard Pyle School of Illustration.
