His innovation on tungsten filament helped create modern light bulbs and the first X-ray tube. He was director of the Research Laboratory at General Electric, where he developed ductile tungsten, the carbon substitute in light bulbs.
His greatest genius, a vacuum tube for easily generating x-rays, became an integral part of medical practice everywhere, and is still sometimes referred to as 'Coolidge' tube ".
