Notable for her 2007 memoir Marathon Woman, Switzer rose to fame in 1967 as the first registered woman runner-up at the Boston Marathon. Because women, at the time, were not allowed to compete in the race, she secured entry by registering under the name "KV Switzer."
In 1974, she was the fastest woman in the city. New York City Marathon, completing the races in three hours, seven minutes, twenty-nine seconds.
