After completing his World War II-era service in the United States Army, he made his acting debut in a 1949 episode of The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse and continued. appeared in his first film, To Kill a Mockingbird (as the prosecutor Mr. Gilmer's character), in 1962.
Born in New York City, he is the son of Isobel Peckham and architect Paul Windom and great-grandson of United States Republican politician and Secretary of the Treasury William Windom. His years of marriage - Carol Keyser, Barbara Joyce, Barbara Goetz, Jacqulyn Hopkins, and Patricia Tunder - produced a total of six children.
