The 19th President of the United States who ended Reconstruction and started the beginning of civil service reform.
His presidential election was one of the closest in history and resulted in the compromise of 1877, in which Democrats endorsed him in the election. He in turn agreed to end all federal military intervention in Confederate politics, thus ending reconstruction once and for all.
