Nhat Le is the son of the late Cung Tuc Dai Vuong Tran Duc, but Nhat Le is actually the son of a court performer Duong Khuong and a singing son. When Duong Khuong's wife was pregnant, Tran Duc, because he liked her, got married, and Nhat Le became Tran Duc's child. After the coronation, the day after the coronation, the alcohol was indulgent, lustful, only worried about enjoying, making the mandarins disappointed. In 1370, the third son of King Tran Minh Tong united with a number of nobles and officials in the court to mutiny, the generals brought troops, captured Nhat Le and proclaimed himself king, taking the name Tran Nghe Tong.
Because of the relationship with the outside, Ho Quy Ly is highly trusted by Nghe Tong. In 1371, he was appointed as the Ambassador of the Conclave, and was married to Princess Huy Ninh. In August of the same year, King Nghe Tong ordered Quy Ly to go to Nghe An to gather the people. In September, the king crowned him Trung Tuyen Quoc Thuong Mar.
At the end of 1372, Tran Nghe Tong ceded the throne to his brother Tran Kinh or Tran Due Tong. Tran Due Tong is the son of Don Tu Thai Phi - the aunt of Ho Quy Ly. Due Tong appointed Quy Ly as the Military Staff. In 1376, King Chiem named Che Bong Nga again led his army to invade. Tran Due Tong ordered Do Tu Binh to fight the enemy. Che Bong Nga was scared and offered gifts to apologize. Tu Binh hid the gold and told the king that Che Bong Nga was arrogant and disobedient. Due Tong decided to lead the army to fight. In this battle Due Tong died, Le Quy Ly at that time was taking care of the army, heard the news that the king was dead and fled in fear.
In 1377, Nghe Tong saw Due Tong's son. The battle should take place at the funeral ceremony and buried at Hy Lang. After that, his eldest son, Tran Hien, became king, taking the title Tran Phe De, and his title was Gian Hoang. According to historian Ngo Si Lien, Tran Phe De was a childish man without authority, unable to manage the government. At this time, Che Bong Nga attacked Thang Long citadel, killed people, robbed and left.
In early 1380, Che Bong Nga continued to attack Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quy Ly was ordered to dominate. Marines came to Thanh Hoa to resist. Quy Ly let Nguyen Da Phuong and Pham Kha Vinh stay, but he returned to Thang Long to ask for aid, but Nghe Tong did not agree, so he returned the military power.
After Nguyen Da Phuong returned to the capital to realize that he had great publicity, so he publicly criticized Quy Ly as an incompetent person. Quy Ly angrily blamed Da Phuong, causing Nghe Tong to dismiss Da Phuong from his position. Quy Ly wanted to destroy Phuong completely, so he told Nghe Tong to kill Phuong otherwise Phuong would go to Champa, so Phuong was forced to commit suicide by the king. At that time, rebels were everywhere. In 1392, the venerable Tran Nhat Chuong planned to kill Quy Ly. The emperor sent someone to kill Nhat Chuong. The student Bui Mong Hoa offered to ask Thuong Hoang to eliminate Quy Ly, but Thuong Hoang allowed Quy Ly to read me the chapter. After that, Mong Hoa had to avoid appearing.
One night while sleeping, Nghe Tong dreamed that Due Tong read a poem. The Emperor pondered and thought it was a sign that Quy Ly would soon take the throne, but could no longer act. King Nghe Tong called Quy Ly in and said that, after the death of Thuong Hoang, you should help the country. Upon hearing this, Quy Ly knelt down and wept and swore an oath to be faithful.

Quy Ly sent someone to look at the land to leave Thanh Hoa's palace. Pham Cu Luan and Nguyen Nhu Thuyet came up with a theory to dissuade, but Quy Ly did not listen.
