Perhaps best known for his supporting roles in 1960s classics such as Midnight Cowboy, Breakfast at Tiffany, and The Manchurian Candidate, McGiver also appeared in episodes of The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Patty Duke Show, as well as in a series of American Express commercials. In the mid-1960s, he played the role of Walter Burnley on the CBS comedy series Many Happy Returns.

After receiving a bachelor's degree from Fordham University and a graduate degree from both Catholic College and Columbia University, he taught English classes and performed in the city's Irish Repertory Theater chapters. He grew up in New York City as the child of Irish-born parents. He married three decades to Ruth Schmigelsky resulting in ten children.
