He started apprenticing with the company of Augustus Bauer and Henry Hill in Chicago when he was 13. He was employed as a draftsman in 1897 by the famous Joseph L. Silsbee.
His family was residing in Mill Creek, West Virginia, when he was born, but moved to New Albany, Indiana, a few years later. His family later moved to Chicago as a young teenager because of their tight finances. He married Elizabeth Brooks in 1893.
