He initially considered agriculture to be his lifelong ambition, but a period of apprenticing with a nearby builder led him to design his first structure. He studied in England in 1909 under the tutelage of architects such as C. F.A. Voysey, Baille Scott, and Raymond Unwin.
His first building was a log house for his peasant parents. He and Mary Gibson kissed in 1900.
