Jack Johnson is the first African-American boxer to win the world heavyweight championship. During his professional boxing career, Jack Johnson fought 105 times, winning 80 victories (including 45 wins by knockout), 12 draws and 13 losses.
In 1908, Jack Johnson went down in history as the first black man to win the world championship after defeating Tommy Burns (Canada) in the deciding match on Boxing day. Jack Johnson proved to the world that the notion that only white people can dominate boxing, black people are always physically and mentally weak is completely wrong.
The match between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries took place on October 7, 1910, and was hailed by the media as the battle of the century. Jack Johnson defeated his opponent after 15 rounds.
Excellent talent, but Jack Johnson's 13 years of professional boxing was fraught with racist abuse. Concerned that Jack Johnson could disrupt the balance of power in America, prosecutors plotted to destroy the newly crowned champion. In 1913, Jack Johnson was incarcerated for "trafficking in white women". Jack Johnson fled the United States and spent 7 years wandering in Europe, Mexico and South America.
In 1920, Jack Johnson returned to America and was forced to execute his unfinished sentence. His career has since faltered.
