American architect known for works including the Yale University Art Library. He was a professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design from 1957 until his death.

He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, received his second letter of the alphabet in 1924, and in 1935 he founded his own workshop. He worked at the Yale School of Architecture from 1947 to 1957 as a design critic and architect.
He has been romantically involved with three women over the course of his life and has one child with each partner: his daughter is by his wife, Esther; His second daughter, Alexandra Tyng, was born to his frequent collaborator, Anne Tyng; and his son was born to Harriet Pattison. His second daughter's birth occurred in Rome to prevent a scandal.
