Cosmonaut and senator who in 1962 was the first American to orbit the Earth and in 1998 became the world's oldest person to go into space. He is a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Medal of Freedom among many other distinctions.
He was the third American to fly into space and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990.
