In 1940 he graduated from high school at Mount Pleasant High School. Bill Butler attended Ohio Wesleyan College, Iowa Wesleyan College and the University of Iowa. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Iowa.
After graduation he worked as a radio engineer in Gary, Indiana. He later moved to Chicago, where he built the first TV stations for the ABC affiliate and later worked for WGN-TV. While working at WGN-TV Butler had the opportunity to meet William Friedkin - a film producer, screenwriter and American director.
When he was five years old, he and his parents moved to a small college village called Mount Pleasant in Iowa is located in Henry County.
