After leaving the Colorado garrison he transferred to the 101st Airborne Rangers division, holding the positions of company captain, respectively, battalion commander and then brigade commander. After that, he held the positions of platoon, company, and battalion-level operations, doing the work of consulting and training.
After that, he was appointed to the position of Brigade Commander of the 3rd Brigade. then 101st Air Cavalry Division. In 2005, he was battalion commander of the 2nd battalion of the 505th US Airborne Infantry Regiment participating in the war in Iraq with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
After being promoted to colonel. , he became the brigade commander for the Afghanistan battlefield. Then in 2012, he was sent to study advanced politics at Stanford University.
On May 20, 2014, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general by the United States Government and Department of Defense. United States and became the first senior Vietnamese soldier to be promoted to brigadier general. Currently, he is the deputy commander of the US 1st Cavalry Division in charge of combat operations.
