Charles Kushner is an American businessman, real estate investor, and philanthropist. In 1985 he founded Kushner Companies. In 1999, he won the boss of Ernst & Young for Entrepreneur of the Year in New Jersey. By that time, Kushner had developed more than 10,000 residential apartments, a residential construction business, commercial and industrial parks, and a community bank. In the summer of 2004, Kushner was fined US$508,900 by the Federal Election Commission for his unlawful interference in political campaigns. In 2005, following an investigation by the United States Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey, district attorney Chris Christie negotiated and reached an agreement with Kushner regarding his charges. In the end, he had to stand and plead guilty to 18 charges, including tax evasion, false testimony, and interference in political campaigns. Judge Jose L. Linares sentenced Kushner to one to two years in prison. Kushner served 14 months in federal prison in Montgomery. After his release from prison, Charles Kushner continued his real estate business. He moved his business from New Jersey to New York City in 2007. Kushner's company purchased the Fifth Avenue building in Manhattan for $1.8 billion.
