In 1976, Niki Lauda was involved in a serious accident on the Nurburgring (Germany). Due to not being able to control the speed at the corner of Bergwerk, Niki Lauda's Ferrari 312T2 crashed into the barrier, burst into flames and was hit by two cars behind. The Ferrari became a ball of fire, burning about 900 liters of gasoline in the crash. The Austrian racer was lucky to escape death. After a long surgery, Niki Lauda's face was deformed quite a lot. After the divorce, the Formula 1 racing legend suffered from a long depression.

It was touching that Birgit Wetzinger, a flight attendant 30 years younger than him, who works at the Niki airline he owns, donated a kidney to replace him. In 2008, Nikki Lauda married Birgit Wetzinger after 4 years of dating. Birgit Wetzinger gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl.

Close relationship
The 1970s is considered the golden era of Formula 1 racing, with the appearance of two cavalry rivals James Hunt (British) and Niki Lauda (Austria).
The 1976 F1 season with an incident on the track went down in the history of this fast sport. Director Ron Howard and the screenwriters based on that true story to create the 2013 movie Rush - a work that is receiving countless praises from film critics around the world.
