Young / Before famous

In 1937, he won a scholarship to represent the American Academy of Dramatic Arts with the help of his teacher, Harold Van Kirk. His first paid entertainment job was in 1941, as a DJ on Trenton's WTTM radio station.

He married Bette Lee Wilcox on August 13, 1945 and divorced in 1952. When he was given full custody of her two children she kidnapped them and brought them to Florida. After regaining custody of his children, he married his second wife Edie Adams on September 12, 1954.
