He studied languages at the University of Exeter before starting a career in comedy at the strong urging of his girlfriend. In 2005 he was nominated for the Perrier Best New Artist award for his show in 1984 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
He grew up in Carmarthen, Wales, the son of two academic parents, with his two older siblings. He married his long-term partner Sian Harries in August 2013.
