Best known for editing a popular magazine called Buying Guide Comics, she is also known for her column "Maggie of the World" in the San Diego Comic-Con International blog. For her work on previous publications, she won Eisner, Jack Kirby, and Inkpot Awards, as well as a Comic Art Fan Favorite Writer honor.
She sometimes writes under the pseudonym of Arthur Judson.

Her mother, Betty Curtis, is a Hugo Award nominated science fiction author. With her husband, Don Thompson, Maggie Thompson raised children named Stephen and Valerie and essentially co-created fandom comic books.
