Romantic era composer and pianist best remembered for "Woodland Sketches," "Sea Pieces," "New England idylls," and other piano ranges. His most popular pieces are "To a Wild Rose" from "Woodland Sketches." He sometimes works under the pseudonym Edgar Thorn.
He was inducted into the Academy of Fine Arts and Letters in 1904, part of the first American group to be honored in this way.
 
 

Young / Before famous

He was first instructed on the piano by Colombian violinist Juan Buitrago. He was also trained by Venezuelan pianist and composer Teresa Carreño.

Family life info

His family moved to Paris in 1877, allowing him to attend the Paris Conservatory. He married Marian Griswold Nevins, one of his piano students, in 1884.
