Famous for his chamber music and his compositions for larger ensembles. He founded the Brandeis Chamber Ensemble and served as pianist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1964 to 1965 during Erich Leinsdorf's tenure.
He began teaching at Brandeis University in 1957, being named Irving G. Fine Professor of Music and finally Professor Emeritus.

He studied composition at both Harvard University and Yale University before coming to Vienna on a Fulbright Fellowship. His teachers included Walter Piston at Harvard and Paul Hindemith at Yale.
He married artist Susan Silverpoint SCHWALB in 1983.
