After studying medicine under William Cullen at the University of Glasgow, he trained with William Smellie at St George's Hospital, London.
He was the brother-in-law of poet Anne Hunter (wife of surgeon John Hunter) and uncle of Agnes Hunter (who later became the wife of prominent Scottish military man and politician James Campbell of Inverneill).
