Known for his album covers, movie posters, paintings, sci-fi drawings and comic book art, he has received three Chesley Awards; a Hugo Award; a Spectrum Grand Master of the Fantastic Art Award; and merged into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, he created album covers for three recorded Molly Hatchet.

He began training at the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts when he was only eight years old. Eight years later, he began working in the studio of comic book artist Bernard Baily.
He and his three sisters were raised in Brooklyn, New York. In 1956, he married Eleanor Kelly; The couple raised children named Frank Jr. , Billy, Holly, and Heidi.
