Nguyen Cao Cuong joined The Cong football team in 1970, at the age of 16, playing in the youth team. Due to his excellent performance in the youth team 3 years later, he was specially added to the 1 The Cong squad, selected to compete for the Body Cong team in China, the German Democratic Republic, and Hungary. Kicking in the middle, Cao Cuong was endowed with a good physique (1m73 high, ideal at that time), with a thick and stocky body. He became a terror to all defenders thanks to his brave, aggressive kicking, not afraid to collide, especially when he was very agile when describing conflicts between opposing defenders.
In the 1970s to 1990s, Vietnamese football fans knew the name Nguyen Cao Cuong as a tireless scoring machine.
He was selected to join the Vietnamese Youth team to compete in the Soviet Union and Hungary in 1982.
From 1986-1989, he attended the competition while studying at the university level, majoring in football coaching, and was awarded the rank of Sports Master. He became the coach of the youth football teams of the Military Sports Center in 1990.
Labor Newspaper awarded him the title of Best Player in Vietnam 20 years 1975-1995 in 1994.
He worked as a coach of The Cong U15 football team and won a silver medal at the Vietnam U15 Football Championship in 2002. He was appointed Deputy Director of The Cong Professional Football Club with the rank of Colonel in 2004. .
He replaced former teammate Nguyen Manh Cuong as head coach The Cong in 2006.
He retired in 2009, after The Cong football team was disbanded and the players were transferred to Thanh Hoa.
