Tom Watson was one of the most successful golfers of the 70-80s with 8 Majors titles (including 5 Open Championship titles, being 1 of 4 golfers with the most championships). Tom Watson was the number one golfer in the world according to Golf World Rankings McCormack from 1978-1982. In 1983 and 1984, Tom Watson ranked 2nd behind Seve Ballesteros. In 44 years of playing professionally since 1971, Tom Watson won 39 titles on the PGA Tour system, but could not complete the precious Grand Slam because he had never won the PG Championship. Tom Watson has been voted Golfer of the Year 6 times and led the PGA prize list 5 times. When he switched to playing on the Champions Tour (a tournament for seniors), Watson also had 14 titles.
Tom Watson played for the US Ryder Cup team in 1977, 1981, 1983 and 1989. In 1993, Tom Watson was honored to be chosen as captain and the US team won against the European team with a score of 15-13.
Tom Watson was once awarded the Bob Jones title by the American Golf Association. for outstanding golfers in 1987 and joined the PGA World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988. In addition, Tom Watson also won the title of Best Golfer of the 80s of the last century.

Tom Watson was taught golf by his father at the age of 6. His first coach was Stan Thirsk at Country Club Kansas City. Tom Watson became an amateur champion at the age of 17. He won four Missouri Amateur state championships, 1967, 1968, 1970 and 1971. Tom Watson joined the PGA Tour in 1971, then won the Western Open three years later.
Tom Watson attended Stanford University to study psychology.
