He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and played on the school's soccer team for three years. After returning to his alma mater to receive his doctorate in history, he became a professor in the history department at the University of New Orleans.
With his first wife, Judith Dorlester, he had a daughter, Stephenie, and a son, Barry. Dorlester died at his age, and later married Ambrose Moira Buckley, with whom he had two sons and a daughter.
