Doherty has written articles that have been published in dozens of newspapers and magazines including the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Mother Jones, Spin, National Review, Weekly Standard, and San Francisco Chronicle.

He received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Florida. He began his career as a student intern for Liberty magazine and took on the role of cultural and musical articles at The Independent Florida Alligator - an independent student newspaper serving the University Florida, Gainesville, North Florida.
In addition to her journalism career, Doherty also played bass in several punk rock bands such as The Jeffersons and Turbo Satan. He founded his own record company Cherry Smash Records in 1993. In the 90s, he started working for the "Cato Institute" - a public policy research organization.
