Krauthammer attended McGill University in Montreal, graduating in 1970 with honors in both economics and political science. A year after graduating from McGill University, he studied politics at Balliol College, Oxford, before returning to the United States to study medicine at Harvard University.
Krauthammer became permanently paralyzed after a diving accident during his first year of medical school at Harvard. After spending 14 months recovering in the hospital, and despite being confined to a wheelchair, he returned to medical school, graduating to become a psychiatrist involved in creating diagnoses and statistics of disorders. Psychosis III.
In 1987, for his political commentary for The Washington Post, he was honored with the Pulitzer Prize. His career as a writer began there, later writing for the Weekly Standard and as a nightly panelist with Bret Baier on Fox News. From 1990 to December 2013, he was a weekly panelist on the Washington side PBS news program from 1990 until it ceased production in December 2013.
Originally fluent in English French and Hebrew, Krauthammer is also a member of the American Flag journalist and the Council on Foreign Relations. He is one of the founding members of Pro Musica Hebraica - a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting lost or forgotten Jewish classical music. On September 26, 2013, Krauthammer received the William F. Buckley Award for Excellence in Mass Communication.
