Journalist Clare Hollingworth profile

Who is Journalist Clare Hollingworth?
Clare Hollingworth is a journalist and author who is credited with being the first war correspondent to cover the outbreak of World War II. Until now, despite being 105 years old, she is no longer as lucid as before, but she was once the most legendary reporter in Europe.

Young / Before famous

Hollingworth was known as an energetic, daring reporter. In August 1939, despite being an inexperienced reporter, Clare Hollingworth sneaked alone onto the German-Polish border, where she witnessed the German army's increase in troops and artillery and saw the tension of the war in Europe. Hollingworth persuaded the Consul General in Katowice - John Anthony Thwaites to lend her his car and driver to learn the facts in Germany. While driving along the German-Polish border, Hollingworth came across a large German contingent of tanks and armored vehicles facing Poland. The next morning Hollingworth informed the British embassy in Warsaw about the German invasion of Poland. But with suspicions from embassy officials, Hollingworth used his cell phone to pick up the sounds of German troops. Consequently, Hollingworth was the first witness to report to the British Foreign Office about the invasion of Poland. In the following decades, Hollingworth reported on conflicts in Palestine, Algeria, China, Aden, and Vietnam. In 1946, she was one of the survivors of the King David Hotel bombing in Jerusalem that killed 91 people.
She is the author of five books: The Three Weeks' War in Poland ( 1940), There's a German Right Behind Me (1945), The Arabs and the West (1950), Mao (1985), and her memoirs, Front Line (1990 updated 2005).
In 1939, Hollingworth was was chosen to oppose Melton's parliamentary seats for the Labor Party in the general election. But in 1940, because of the outbreak of war, the elections were adjourned, and re-run in 1945. As a result, a different labor candidate was chosen.
Since the 1980s, Hollingworth has lived in Hong Kong. For a long time, she was an ambassador for foreign correspondents.
