John Hughes was a longtime columnist for the Deseret Morning News in Salt Lake City from 1997 to 2006; he is a 1967 Pulitzer Prize winner for writing about the 1965 communist coup and a former editor of The Christian Science Monitor. Hughes has also served as assistant secretary of state for the United States and as assistant secretary-general of the United Nations. He is the author of the books:

Hughes was educated in England, then he began his journalism career as a reporter at Natal Mercury for 3 years. He then returned to London and worked for a Fleet Street news agency and became an employee of the London-based The Daily Mirror. He also became a freelance writer and was a contributor to a number of articles in London and "The Christian Science Monitor" in Boston.
In 1955, he moved to America and began working for The Christian. Science Monitor in Boston at the age of 25. After a year and a half he returned to South Africa to work as a reporter for The Monitor. He then worked as an assistant foreign editor for the Boston headquarters and as a foreign correspondent in Asia for 6 years. From 1970, he became chief editor for The Christian Science Monitor, where he held for nine years and was promoted to editor and editor-in-chief.
From 1981 to 1985, He moved to Washington DC to serve in the Reagan administration. There, he served as Deputy Director of the United States Information Agency and was later appointed
director of the Voice of America. During that same period, he became State Department spokesman and Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs. Some time later he returned to Orleans as an editor and news reporter for Cape Cod Oracle for more than 6 months.
Four years later, he returned to Massachusetts however the company was later sold by him and he went on to host a short international radio program for The Christian Science Monitor for several years. He then bought a newspaper in Maine with his friend, and it was a short-lived success.
In 1992, he became the President of Broadcasting of the People's Republic of China. Hoa until 1993, he was appointed announcer of the Advisory Committee. He then joined the Brigham Young University (BYU) communications program in International Studies and became an Assistant Secretary-General and Communications Director at the United Nations.

Hughes is the only child of Evan and Dellis May Hughes. During World War II, both of Hughes' parents were actively involved in the war, his father was draftsman in the British army and served in North Africa for three years, his mother was also engaged in the Main Post. government during the war.
