In 1968, he served as Deputy Secretary of the Central Committee of the Southern Department for a short time. In March 1983, Le Duc Tho was the Secretary in charge of Private Affairs, Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs, and Chairman of the National Defense Committee. In 1986, he was appointed as Head of the Personnel Subcommittee of the 6th Congress. From December 1986, he was elected as an Advisor to the Central Committee of the Party.

Le Duc Tho is considered a giant diplomat of Vietnam. He is also a poet with a number of works such as "On the Roads", a collection of poems published in 1956, "Road of a Thousand Miles", a collection of poems published in 1977, "Diary of the way to the frontline" a collection of poems published in 2016. 1978, "Poetry of Le Duc Tho" was published in 1983.

He passed away on October 13, 1990, at the age of 79. His name was given to a street near My Dinh Stadium - Hanoi.
