Evan Smith is an American journalist, executive director and editorial director of The Texas Tribune and host of the weekly "Overheard" interview with Evan Smith. During his time as editor of Texas, his monthly publications were nominated for sixteen National Review Awards, the equivalent of a Pulitzer Prize. In April 2009, the Texas Monthly was awarded the National Magazine Award for Outstanding Compilation Articles.

Evan Smith earned a bachelor's degree in public policy from Hamilton College before earning a master's degree in Journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.Smith joined the staff of Texas Monthly in 1992, here he is a senior editor. In February 1993, he was promoted to deputy editor-in-chief. He has held editorial positions at a number of national magazines such as News Week, GQ and a number of other national magazines, and is deputy editor at The New Republic. From February 2003 to August 2010, he hosted a weekly interview program that aired on PBS and several public radio stations throughout Texas.
He resigned from the Texas Monthy newspaper. On August 21, 2009. He then, along with Austin, John Thornton, veteran journalist Ross Ramsey, founded The Texas Tribune, a non-profit online public media organization that was launched on November 3, 2009. 2009. In September 2010 he hosted a weekly interview program "Overheard with Evan Smith" which was broadcast on PBS nationwide.
He is a member of the public communications department (PBS) of PBS. The Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, St. Stephen's Episcopal, the Austin Community Foundation, and the Waller Creek Conservancy. He is also the founder and president of the Texas Hall of Fame film studio. He served for 5 years in the Association of Journal Editors, most recently as vice president of America; 6 years on the board of KLRU, Austin's public broadcaster, which he chairs; 9 years with the Austin Film Society including twice as president and for 8 years at the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin.
