In 1968, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Southern California. She began her journalism career in 1970, working first as an editor and producer for KTLA-TV in Los Angeles and later for ABC O&O KABC-TV also in Los Angeles.
In 1975, she moved to Portland, Oregon and worked as a reporter for Katu-TV for a short time. A few months later she moved back to California and worked as a reporter and presenter for KGO-TV in San Francisco until June 1979, she transferred to WMAQ-TV NBC. Here, she became a reporter and host for the weekend news. With her talent, she has repeatedly won Emmy Awards and became the manager of WMAQ-TV in November 1983. In 1984, she was the news presenter of WLS-TV ABC station Chicago 7.
On September 6, 2016, Yu announced his retirement from WLS-TV after 46 years in the news and 37 years in the Chicago market. She retired after broadcasting the news at 4 p.m. on November 23, 2016.
