Hoai Thanh participated in the Dong Du movement against the French of Phan Boi Chau.
When he was young, he was a student at Quoc Hoc Vinh School. At the age of 19, he graduated valedictorian at the general level of Vinh Quoc Hoc School. Hoai Thanh went to Hanoi to study at Buoi School. He joined the Tan Viet revolutionary party organization, so he was arrested and sentenced to 6 months of suspended prison, deported to his hometown.
After being released from prison, Hoai Thanh continued to study at Buoi School but was soon expelled for keeping documents against the French government. In 1930, he passed the baccalaureate and applied for a job at the popular daily newspaper.
