An important figure in the history of modern theatre, Meyerhold associated himself with the symbolist movement in drama and founded the Meyerhold Theatre, which staged creative productions of works by Nikolai Gogol, Vladimir Mayakovsky , and Nikolai Erdman. Later in her career, Meyerhold headed the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theaters.
Sadly, he was taken by the government of Joseph Stalin, which viewed his avant-garde theater productions as a threat to the political regime. Shortly before Meyerhold was brought to death, his second wife was also killed, presumably by the Soviet NKVD (People's Commissariat for the Interior)

After abandoning his studies in both law and violin, he studied with Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenkoat at the Moscow Philharmonic Drama School and went on to perform in nearly two dozen productions at the famous Moscow Art Theater.
A native of Penza, Russia, he is the youngest of eight children born to Emil Fyodorovich Meyerhold and Alvina Danilovna. His first marriage, Olga Munt, produced three daughters; He then began an affair with, and eventually married, stage acclaim actress Zinaida Reich.
