She studied at Ngan Dua High School, Dang Thu Thao's family faced many difficulties. Her father's business was difficult and he had diabetes. The family has to sell the house they live in, buy a smaller house to have money for treatment.
After graduating from high school, her family did not have money to pay tuition fees for her to attend university. She begged her mother to let her work for a year to pay school fees for the following year. At first, she studied makeup and met Mr. Dang Hung, a famous makeup artist in Can Tho and was advised by him to take a beauty contest, but she didn't care so she decided to go to work.
Dang Thu Thao went to Can Tho city and sold cosmetics in a supermarket. Before participating in the Miss Vietnam contest, Dang Thu Thao participated and won the title of Miss Mekong Delta 2012.
In 2012, Thu Thao was crowned at the 13th national beauty pageant held at Da Nang city.

She is the second daughter in a family with an older brother and a younger brother. Thu Thao's father, Dang Van Dat, worked as a teacher before, then retired due to illness, and worked as a fish fry presser. Her mother is a seamstress and her name is Nguyen Hong Tho. The couple built a career with Tan Dat fish hatchery in Ngan Dua town. When she first moved to live separately, her father's income from teaching was not much, while her mother worked in the fields and sewed to earn extra money. Living in a remote area, traveling conditions are difficult, especially when the children are sick, they have to borrow a boat and take them to the district center, dozens of kilometers away, for treatment.
The two grandparents moved to Hong Dan district to trade in fingerlings and facilitate their children's education. At first, trading encountered many obstacles, but then, thanks to determination, gradually stabilized. Around 2005, the district built an administrative center, the family's house fell into the area of clearance. Therefore, the hatchery had to move to Thong Nhat hamlet, Ngan Dua town and her family also moved here.
