The publisher of the earliest H. P. horror story Lovecraft, he also had a career as a multi-genre author. His works include the Sac Prairie Saga; novels such as Family-friendly Murder Wakely (1934) and Bright Journey (1940); and many short stories, essays, and poems.
Although famous for his horror stories, he has also written extensively about the people and places of his native Wisconsin.
