He studied zoology and chemistry through Columbia University's extension programs and eventually received a Ph. His degree allowed him to secure a position on the faculty of medicine at Boston University.
He was born in Russia to a Jewish family; He and his parents immigrated to the United States when he was a young boy. He married Gertrude Blugerman in 1942 and married Janet Jeppson two weeks later in 1973 upon divorcing from Blugerman.
