She began working for The Washington Post in 1938, shortly after graduating from the University of Chicago. After the death of her publisher husband, she took control of the article (which had previously been owned by her own father, Eugene Meyer).
She had four children with her husband, Phillip Graham (whom she married in 1940). Her daughter, Lally, was born in 1943, and her three sons (Donald, William, and Graham) were born between 1945 and 1952.
